Breaking: Captain Amarinder Singh resigns as Punjab CM

Amarinder Singh, under pressure from the Congress, resigned as Punjab Chief Minister this afternoon. He met the state Governor at the Raj Bhawan and handed over his resignation.

“I feel humiliated…,” Amarinder Singh told reporters. He also said he and his supporters will later decide their future course of action.

He submitted his resignation along with that of his council of ministers, his media advisor said.

Asked about his future course of action, he said, “As far as my future politics is concerned, there is always an option and I will use that option when time comes.”

“I am in the Congress party. I will talk to my supporters and decide future course of politics,” he said.

Singh said he decided this morning to resign from his post and that he had spoken to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and informed her about his decision.

Singh was accompanied by his wife and MP Preneet Kaur and son Raninder Singh when he submitted his resignation to Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

Earlier the Congress had called a legislature party meeting in Chandigarh after over 50 party MLAs from the state wrote to party president Sonia Gandhi seeking Amarinder’s removal. The meeting was attended by observers Ajay Maken and Harish Choudhary along with the party’s state in-charge Harish Rawat.

As Amarinder Singh addressed the media after he resigned, he said, “This is the third time this has happened; MLAs were called to Delhi for the second time and then again for a third time at the Congress Legislative Party meeting. If there is any element of doubt over my ability, I feel humiliated.”

The Congress has 80 MLAs in the 117-member state assembly.

Trouble in the Punjab Congress has been brewing for long and Amarinder Singh was strongly opposed to Sidhu’s appointment as PCC chief.

Sidhu has been at loggerheads with Amarinder Singh ever since he quit the Punjab cabinet as a minister in 2019. He had become more vocal in his views in the last some months.

Last month, four ministers and around two dozen party legislators had raised the banner of revolt against the Punjab CM and said they had no faith in Amarinder Singh’s ability to honour unfulfilled promises.

Elections in the state are due in about four months.
