Calcutta High Court imposes Rs 5 lakh fine on Mamata Banerjee

In a setback to Mamata Banerjee, the Calcutta High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on her. High Court Justice Kaushik Chanda, who is hearing the Nandigram case, has imposed this fine on Mamata Banerjee, finding the allegations against her baseless. Justice Chanda recused himself from the case.

The fine amount will be used for the families of the lawyers affected by Corona. In fact, Mamta’s lawyer had demanded transfer of it from the bench of Justice Chanda, alleging bias in the hearing of Nandigram case. Mamata had claimed through her lawyer that Chanda was often seen with BJP leaders.

Justice Chanda, hearing the matter himself, observed that if a person appears for a political party, it is unusual but while hearing a case, he gives up his prejudice. Justice Chanda further said, “Therefore it is absurd to suggest that a judge who has affiliation with any political party can be biased.”

Mamata had challenged Suvendu’s victory
Mamata Banerjee had filed a petition in the High Court challenging the victory of Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram assembly constituency. Earlier, CM Mamata Banerjee had written a letter to the acting Chief Justice of the High Court, Rajesh Bindal, urging him to refer the election petition to another bench to avoid bias against him.
