Mamata Banerjee: Kolkata, West Bengal: The Trinamool Congress faced another jolt on Wednesday as Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra formally resigned from the party and joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee, deepening the internal crisis that has gripped the TMC since its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Why Madan Mitra Walked Out
Mitra, who was inducted as General Secretary of the TMC’s state committee just weeks earlier, said he could no longer function effectively within the party. He claimed his concerns were repeatedly ignored by the leadership.
“More and more of Mamata Banerjee’s long-time associates are leaving the party because, in my view, the leadership is focused on promoting Abhishek Banerjee rather than strengthening the organisation,” Mitra said.
He added that he had once suggested Abhishek step back for six months to a year to let the party rebuild, an offer he said was refused.
Mamata Banerjee Backs Abhishek, Alleges Threats
Responding via a Facebook Live address, Mamata Banerjee defended her nephew strongly, calling him someone who is “fighting like a tiger” despite central agencies summoning his wife and children. She also alleged that Mitra’s family had been threatened before his exit, a claim TMC leader Kunal Ghosh echoed, pointing to ED summons issued to Mitra’s wife and son.
“I Can Restart,” Says Didi
Mamata Banerjee: Despite the growing exodus, Mamata struck a defiant note, saying she is prepared to rebuild the TMC from the ground up, just as she did in 2006. The rebel faction, which claims backing from over 58 MLAs and has taken control of the party headquarters, is now preparing for a July 21 Shaheed Diwas rally in Kolkata.
The TMC split, triggered by the assembly poll debacle, shows no signs of slowing, with more leaders reportedly weighing their next move.
