Opposition Meeting: Tuesday's critical meeting of the Opposition INDIA bloc will take place in Delhi and cover a range of topics, such as seat-sharing, developing a joint campaign blueprint, and formulating a plan to challenge the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Following its defeat in the most recent assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, a plan of action is anticipated to be discussed.
Winter Session Setting
The meeting is significant because it is taking place in the middle of the Winter Session of Parliament, which saw the suspension of 92 MPs from various opposition parties for holding protests and yelling slogans in response to the security breach that occurred on December 13 in the Lok Sabha. This is the highest number of MPs suspended from the House in a single session.
Boycott Decision Looms
The most opposition members suspended in a single day occurred on Monday when 45 members of the Rajya Sabha and 33 members of the Lok Sabha were suspended. According to sources, a decision regarding the boycott of the remaining days of the Winter Session of Parliament by other opposition members will be made soon.
Fourth INDIA Bloc Convening
The INDIA bloc will convene for the fourth time this year. On June 23, the first meeting took place in Patna. The 27 opposition parties adopted resolutions to jointly contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election at their meetings, which were held in Mumbai between August 31 and September 1 and in Bengaluru on July 17–18 in the second meeting.
Rescheduled INDIA Bloc Meeting
The INDIA bloc meeting was originally scheduled for December 6, but it was rescheduled for December 17 due to the absence of several alliance leaders, including Nitish Kumar, Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, and Akhilesh Yadav, the head of the Samajwadi Party (SP). Jalpaiguri Owing to a busy schedule, Chief Minister Hemant Soren will not be attending the INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi today. He's scheduled to speak at a Gumla programme.
JMM Delegates to Represent
Hemant Soren is a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and three of its delegates will attend the gathering. Mahua Maji, a member of the Rajya Sabha, Vijay Hansada, a member of the Lok Sabha, and Supriyo Bhattacharya, the party general secretary, have all been nominated to attend. Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Mamata Banerjee, met with Chief Minister of Delhi and leader of the AAP, Arvind Kejriwal, on Monday to talk about the political climate in the nation. The head of TMC declared after the meeting that she was prepared to advocate for alliance partners across the nation.
Tejashwi Yadav's Election Preparedness
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and deputy chief minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, said that the earlier-formed committees have been working behind the scenes to get ready for the elections. He continued by saying that each member of the opposition would do their share and that regional parties were extremely powerful. "Wherever there are regional parties, the BJP is nowhere to be seen. Most of the regional parties are with INDIA bloc," the RJD leader said.
Opposition's Central Challenge
Coming up with a common alternative programme to oppose the current government is the main task facing the leaders of the opposition parties who have united to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Reaching an agreement on the appointment of a convener, a spokesperson, and a shared secretariat are among the other difficult problems.
Congress's Declining Influence
Within the alliance, the Congress's standing has deteriorated as well. The party almost vanished in the Hindi heartland. The dynamics inside the INDIA bloc are expected to shift as other opposition parties aim to unseat it as the centre of the alliance. The opposition parties are under increased pressure to present a unified front as a result of the BJP's recent victories in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. A senior Congress leader told PTI that the parties plan to counter PM Modi and the BJP at the conference by advancing their unity theme, "Main Nahin, Hum" (We, Not Me).
Constructive Agenda Focus
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has declared that his party will press on, taking on the BJP with a constructive agenda that prioritises the concerns of the people, unfazed by their recent setbacks. According to sources, the last scheduled Opposition rally in Bhopal in October had to be cancelled due to scheduling conflicts with the assembly polls, so plans for joint rallies by the Opposition would need to be finalised soon at the Delhi meeting.
