DMK hits back at PM Modi over UCC, says ‘introduce for Hindus first’

DMK has hit back on PM Modi after his attack on opposition over UCC

PM Modi: During PM Modi’s address to BJP workers in Madhya Pradesh today, sharp comments at opposition were hurled for their agitation over implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC). DMK has reverted back to Modi stating that UCC should be applied over Hindus first.

Uniform Civil Code should be first introduced in the Hindu religion. Every person including Scheduled Castes and Tribes should be allowed to perform pooja in any temple in the country. We don’t want UCC (uniform Civil Code) only because the Constitution has given protection to every religion,” said DMK’s TKS Elangovan.

Modi attacks opposition

PM Modi had targeted opposition over illegal activities by calling out ruling party in non-BJP ruled states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Bihar. Modi spoke about alleged illegal grab of lands in the state of Tamil Nadu by the ruling party.  “In Tamil Nadu, DMK has allegations of gathering property in an illegal way.” PM said.

Congress stated that PM Modi is distracting public from real issues and he does not talk real issues facing the nation. “He (PM Modi) should first answer about poverty, price rise and unemployment in the country,” said Congress general secretary KC Venugopal. He further added that PM Modi never speaks about Manipur at a time when whole state is burning.

Row over Triple Talaq and UCC

PM Modi’s pitch for UCC is receiving stringent opposition from adversary parties. Criticizing the opposition PM Modi had said “Whoever talks in favour of Triple Talaq, whoever advocates it, those vote bank hungry people are doing a great injustice to Muslim daughters. Triple talaq doesn’t just do injustice to daughters. It is beyond this; the whole family get ruined”.

The bill remains central to BJPs electoral campaigns and the party has promised its implementation. When a private member bill seeking to provide panel for formulation of UCC was introduced in Rajya Sabha last year, opposition had shown taken a resistant stand against it.

The Law Commission has sought involvement from all stakeholders regarding this issue.
