Karnataka Election 2023: The Election Commission issued a warning to political parties and their top campaigners on Tuesday, advising them to use prudence and restraint in their statements while running for office in Karnataka and to avoid defaming the electoral process.
EC Statements for Karnataka Polls
The poll panel made reference in its warning to instances of “inappropriate speech and language” used by individuals, “in particular, by those invested with the statutory position of star campaigner,” during the ongoing campaign. The EC issued a statement in which it stated that “Such cases have prompted multiple complaints, cross complaints, and have also drawn unfavourable media attention.” Taking notice of the aforementioned, the Commission emphasised that National Parties and Star Campaigners enjoy additional enablements under the R.P. Act in an advise issued to all Political Parties for strict compliance.
Attention to the Model Code of Conduct’s (MCC) rules and other legal requirements
In the advisory, ECI called the political parties’ attention to the Model Code of Conduct’s (MCC) rules and other legal requirements, which set the stage and established the parameters for the anticipated campaign discourse. The ECI further underlined that, in accordance with the MCC requirements, the use of provocative and inflammatory utterances, the use of intemperate and abusive language that transgresses the bounds of decency, and criticisms of the character and behaviour of political opponents undermine an environment that is level-playing-field-friendly. The statement noted that the spirit of the MCC forbids attempts to taint the election environment by suggestive or indirect statements or innuendos in addition to the avoidance of a direct breach.
