Gauri Lankesh’s mother, sister join ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’

Late journalist and social activist Gauri Lankesh’s mother Indira Lankesh and sister Kavitha Lankesh joined the Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. Both of them took a padyatra with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi at Belur Cross in Mandya district of Karnataka.

Gauri Lankesh was shot dead on the night of 5 September 2017 near her house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bangalore. Her murder case is going on in the court.

Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra is currently passing through the state of Karnataka. Gauri Lankesh’s mother Indira Lankesh and sister Kavita Lankesh met Rahul Gandhi in Karnataka’s Mandya district and then walked some distance on this journey. Rahul Gandhi embraced Indira Lankesh and welcomed her in the yatra. During the padyatra, Rahul Gandhi was walking holding the hand of the late journalist’s mother. Gauri Lankesh was a resident of Karnataka.

Rahul Gandhi also tweeted on Gauri Lankesh’s family members joining this yatra. He wrote that, “Gauri stood for truth, Gauri stood for courage, Gauri stood for freedom, I stand for Gauri Lankesh and countless others like her, who represent the true spirit of India. Bharat Jodo Yatra is their voice. It can never be silenced.”

Congress President Sonia Gandhi had also joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra on the previous day. After leaving Bellale village in Mandya district early on Thursday (October 6), she briefly participated in a padyatra led by her son and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. Several other party leaders, including former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar, were accompanying him.

Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra started from Kanyakumari on 7 September. The padyatra passed through parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala before entering Karnataka on 30 September. A distance of 3,500 km will be covered during the 150-day journey and this journey will culminate in Jammu and Kashmir.
