Mamata Banerjee push to curb price rise in Bengal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to exempt the state’s popular rice variety ‘Gobindbhog’ from 20 per cent export tax. This exemption has been sought on the lines of exemption given to Basmati rice.

Mamata Banerjee wrote in the letter that the imposition of 20 per cent duty on the export of expensive variety of rice like ‘Gobindbhog’ has had a bad effect on its business. In this two-page letter, she wrote, “The Government of India has imposed 20 per cent excise duty (export tax) on rice which is unfortunate. As a result, the export business of Gobindbhog, an expensive variety of rice, has been badly affected. There has been a negative impact on its demand and on the domestic price of paddy, which has also affected the income of the farmers.”

The Chief Minister wrote, “It is commendable that Basmati, a popular variety of rice, has been kept out of the purview of this duty. It is requested that Gobindbhog should also be exempted from duty on the same lines on which Basmati has been exempted so that the loss to the business can be avoided and the farmers are also not deprived of the benefits.

Mamata Banerjee attended a family function of West Bengal Governor La Ganesan in Chennai on Thursday. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also attended the ceremony. Ganesan, the governor of Manipur, also holds the additional charge of West Bengal. Veteran actor Rajinikanth and other chief ministers attended the 80th birthday celebrations of Ganesan’s brother.

Mamata Banerjee took a flight from Kolkata on Wednesday for Chennai. She was seen enjoying ‘chenda melam’ (a traditional percussion instrument) with the artists outside the venue before ‘courtesy visit’ her at Stalin’s residence.
