Need new Congress to take on BJP, says Shashi Tharoor

Congress Presidential election candidate and senior leader Shashi Tharoor, while interacting with reporters in Hyderabad on Monday, said that there is no G-23 group in the party and claimed that it was all media’s opinion. “As far as I can tell you, some senior party leaders wrote a letter. He invited a large number of people to lend his support. I was told that he had contacted over 100 people over the phone. It happened that in 2020 the Covid lockdown was going on and at that time only 23 people were available in Delhi. It could have been 100 or even more. But only 23 leaders were present in Delhi to sign, so it remained 23. That was all.”

Shashi Tharoor’s reaction came after BJP leader Amit Malviya’s remark that G-23 had left his partner Shashi Tharoor for Mallikarjun Kharge. Amit Malviya had tweeted, ‘Looks like G-23 has abandoned Shashi Tharoor. Prominent leaders of the dissident group proposed Mallikarjun Kharge’s name for Congress president instead of Tharoor, while Shashi is one of them. How soon have the stories of the Congress state offices being closed for Tharoor started circulating in the political circles?

G-23 is a term used for a ‘dissident group’ of the Congress, which strongly advocated some urgent reforms in the Congress party in 2020 and wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi in this regard. In the letter, this group of 23 MPs had demanded a strong and foot time president for the party from the interim president of the Congress. Further speaking about the Congress President’s election, Tharoor said, “This election is about how the Congress should be well prepared to take on the ruling party BJP.”

Shashi Tharoor said, ‘We have lost 2 general elections…we need a fresh strong Congress party, where it can unite effectively to face the challenge of BJP.’ Shashi Tharoor on 28 September Nomination was filed for the election of Congress President. Mallikarjun Kharge is his main rival after Digvijay Singh and Ashok Gehlot were out of the race. It is believed that since Kharge is contesting for the post of president with the support of the Gandhi family, he will be the successor of Sonia Gandhi. Almost all senior G-23 leaders were present during his nomination.
