Opposition to move no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha speaker

The Congress is in talks with other opposition parties to consider moving a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla over his alleged bias. Sources gave this information on Tuesday. He said the idea of ​​bringing the resolution was mooted in a meeting of party MPs on Tuesday morning and Congress leaders are now talking to leaders of other parties on it. The motion is likely to be taken up in the Lok Sabha on Monday but some parties have opposed the move saying it could harm opposition unity.

Within hours of Rahul Gandhi being convicted by a Surat court in a defamation case for his remark on the Prime Minister’s ‘surname’, he was disqualified as an MP. Sources said that the steps taken swiftly in the ‘Rahul case’ will be mentioned in the no-confidence motion. Sources said that the no-confidence motion can be brought only when the proceedings of the House are going on smoothly.

There has been an uproar in the Lok Sabha since the beginning of the second phase of the budget session on March 13. Opposition parties have been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani case, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been pressing for an apology from Rahul Gandhi over his remarks made abroad. Sources said that in August 1963, a no-confidence motion against the Nehru government was moved by Acharya Kriplani. He said no-confidence motions were also brought against the Narasimha Rao-led government and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government.
