The G-20 or Group of Twenty is an organization of the world's 20 largest economies. Its leaders meet every year and discuss plans to advance the global economy.

What is G-20?

  • G-20 was formed in 1999. Then it used to be an organization of finance ministers and governors of central banks. Its first conference was held in December 1999 in Berlin, the capital of Germany.

In 2008-2008, there was a terrible recession in the world. After this recession, changes took place in this organization and it was converted into an organization of top leaders. In 2008, its summit was held in Washington, the capital of America.

G-20 summit was held twice a year in 2009 and 2010. In 2009 it was held in London and Pittsburgh, while in 2010 it was held in Toronto and Seoul. Since 2011, it happens only once a year.

How big is the G-20?

Apart from India, G-20 members include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, US and European Unions are included.

80 percent of the world's GDP and 75 percent of business is done in the G-20 countries only. Not only this, two-thirds of the world's population also lives in these countries.

The G-20 is seen as an extension of the G-7 group of the world's most powerful countries. The US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada are in the G-7. Russia was also involved in it in 1998, but it was separated after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Who will be included in the G-20?

Many global leaders including US President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron will attend the G-20 summit going to be held in Bali.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will stay in Bali for 45 hours. Here he will attend 20 events and will meet 10 global leaders. During this, PM Modi will also take some time out to address the Indian community in Indonesia.

Prime Minister Modi will also hold a bilateral meeting with many leaders on the sidelines of this summit. However, nothing is clear about the meeting of PM Modi and Jinping so far. But if PM Modi and Jinping meet, it will be the first meeting of both after the Galwan clash.
