PM Modi tops the list of world’s most popular leaders, leaves US President behind

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tops the list of ‘most popular’ world leaders with an approval rating of 71 percent. According to the global approval rating released by Morning Consult Political Intelligence, PM Modi has surpassed US President Joe Biden, UK PM Boris Johnson and many other political figures. The ‘Latest Approval Rating’ by Morning Consult Political Intelligence is based on data collected from January 13 to 19, 2022.

The approval rating runs for seven days in each country. This is not the first time that PM Modi was chosen as the most popular leader. In May 2020, he topped the list with 84% popularity. However, in May 2021, the approval rating dropped to 63%. In September 2021, PM Modi was again given the status of the most accepted global leader.

Among the new major global leaders, Mexican President López Obrador was in second place with a 66% approval rating and has surpassed many big leaders including Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, US President Joe Biden in the popularity graph. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has a 60% approval rating. His rating increased by 2% from November 2021. While President Biden received 43% of the vote, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK PM Johnson were voted as the least popular leaders with ratings of 37%, 34% and 26%.

The rating as of January 2022 states that 71% of the average Indian (literate) population approved PM Modi, while only 21% disapproved of him. Yet, when it came to US President Joe Biden, about 49% of the American population disliked him. Furthermore, at least 56% of US citizens also believed that Biden did not outperform ex-US presidents in areas of job performance.

This report comes after the US President has completed one year in office. However, he received a slightly better grade than his predecessor, Donald Trump at the same time four years ago. American data intelligence firm The Morning Consult prepares this ranking by surveying adults of every country. In the last survey conducted in November also, the popularity of PM Modi was the highest.
