The dispute between Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde over Shiv Sena’s symbol is expected to end for the time being. The Election Commission has given an interim ban to both the factions from using the Shiv Sena’s symbol ‘bow and arrow’. The Election Commission has taken this decision regarding the by-elections to be held.

Now neither Uddhav or Eknath Shinde will be able to field candidates in the electoral fray with bow and arrow.

In an interim order on the ongoing factionalism within the party, the Election Commission said, “Such different symbols will also be allotted to both the factions.” They can choose these symbols from the list of free symbols notified by the Election Commission for the current by-elections.

Accordingly, both the groups are directed to submit the details by 1 PM on 10 October.’

The Election Commission said the interim order has been passed “to protect their rights and interests”. The Election Commission said that both the Shiv Sena factions can choose new names in the Maharashtra by-polls. Both the groups have been asked to bring three names each by selecting them. After that the commission will give them different symbols from which they can choose a symbol.

Shiv Sena’s election symbol bow and arrow was claimed by the Eknath Shinde faction. The Shinde faction had sought permission from the Election Commission to use this symbol in elections, on which the commission had sought a response from the Shiv Sena’s Udvav Thackeray faction. Late in the evening, the Election Commission issued an order prohibiting both Shinde and Uddhav factions from using the Shiv Sena’s arrow-headed symbol.
