Punjab Political Crisis resolved: Navjot Singh Sidhu takes charge as Punjab Congress chief

Navjot Singh Sidhu has taken over the command of Punjab Congress, ending the ongoing discord in Punjab Congress. Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday took over as the President of Punjab Congress in the presence of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. As soon as his coronation was announced on the stage, Navjot Singh was seen swinging the cricketer’s bat. Sidhu, the cricketer-turned-politician after taking charge at the state Congress headquarters, said there was no difference between an ordinary party worker and its state unit chief.

Amritsar (East) MLA Sidhu said there is no difference between an ordinary party worker and a state unit chief. Every Congress worker in Punjab has become the head of the party’s state unit from today. Apart from Captain Amarinder Singh, in-charge Harish Rawat was also present on the stage during the coronation.

Navjot Singh Sidhu met Chief Minister Amarinder Singh at Punjab Bhawan on Friday before taking over as the state Congress President. It is being told that there was a cordial and warm meeting between Sidhu and Singh. There were reports of a clash between Sidhu and Singh for some time now.

Congress MLA Pargat Singh told reporters outside Punjab Bhawan that Sidhu met the chief minister at a meeting called over tea in the presence of All India Congress Committee (AICC) Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Rawat. He said the two leaders sat next to each other and the meeting between them was cordial. Senior Congress leaders Manish Tewari, Pratap Singh Bajwa and Lal Singh were also present.

Sidhu and Singh met each other for the first time in the last four months. The Chief Minister’s media advisor tweeted pictures of the talks between the two leaders. Kuljit Singh Nagra and Sangat Singh Gilzian, among the four newly-appointed working presidents of the party’s state unit, extended a formal invitation to the chief minister for the program to take over on Thursday. More than 55 MLAs signed the invitation letter. Seeking to resolve his differences with the chief minister, Sidhu also wrote a letter urging Amarinder Singh to attend the event and said he “has no personal agenda”.
