No-Confidence Motion Debate Divided Among Key Parties

“In this, a time of about 6 hours and 41 minutes has been fixed for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and about one hour and 15 minutes for the Congress party. While, Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), Shivsena, Janata Dal -United (JDU), Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) have been given a total of 2 hours, which has been divided according to the number of party members in the house”, ANI reported citing sources. Other minor parties and independent MPs have been given a time limit of 1 hour and 10 minutes. The motion of no-confidence introduced by Gaurav Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, is item three on the agenda and is being debated amid the backdrop of the ethnic unrest in Manipur, which has repeatedly disrupted the both Houses of Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi to Lead No-Confidence Motion Debate After Reinstatement

Rahul Gandhi, a leader in the Congress party whose membership was reinstated as a result of a Supreme Court order, is anticipated to start today’s discussion of the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha reinstated Gandhi as a member on Monday afternoon, shortly after the Supreme Court stayed his conviction in a defamation case in which he was given a maximum two-year punishment. Gandhi had previously been disqualified from the body. It should be remembered that on August 10, PM Modi is due to respond to the discussion around the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led NDA government. The lower house of the parliament will discuss the move on Tuesday, August 8, and Wednesday, August 9, after which the prime minister will respond. The motion was introduced by the opposition parties of the INDIA group.

Meeting Scheduled Ahead of No-Confidence Motion

In advance of the motion of no confidence, the BJP has convened a meeting of its parliamentary party for Tuesday. The odds are clearly in the government’s favour, and the opposition is anticipated to take advantage of the situation to show how united it has become ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year. The topic of ethnic violence in Manipur has often caused disruptions in the Monsoon session of Parliament, and the Opposition has insisted that the Prime Minister make a speech in the House. The Opposition had refused the Home Minister Amit Shah‘s offer to participate in any Manipur debate, which he had made to Parliament.
