The unprecedented violence ravaging the lives of people in Manipur has left a deep wound on the conscience of the country. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I am deeply saddened to see that people were forced to flee from the only place they call home.”

Sonia Gandhi made this appeal

Sonia Gandhi said, “I appeal for peace and harmony. The healing path we choose to walk will shape the kind of future that our children will inherit.” She said, “I have immense hope and faith in the people of Manipur and know that together we can overcome this. But will cross the ordeal.”

How did violence break out in Manipur?

About a month and a half ago, violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. More than a hundred people have lost their lives in the violence. The Meitei community in the state has been demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for a long time. On May 3, a tribal solidarity march was organized in the hilly districts to protest against this demand of the Meitei community. After which the clashes started. At present, efforts are on to restore peace in the state.

The central government is on the target of the opposition parties regarding the situation in Manipur. In a tweet on June 15, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused PM Modi of keeping silence on Manipur and suggested sending an all-party delegation to the state in an effort to restore peace.
