Three days after being arrested for tweeting about the Morbi bridge collapse in Gujarat, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Saket Gokhale was granted bail by an Ahmedabad court on Thursday, according to party leader Derek O’Brien.
The Gujarat Police arrested Gokhale on December 5 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He was taken to Ahmedabad and later formally arrested. He was then taken into jail by the police till December 8.
The Gujarat Police claimed on Wednesday that Gokhale had tweeted false information on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Morbi in order to gain political advantage.
On November 1, the day after a bridge across the Machchu River collapsed, killing 141 people, the prime minister paid a visit to Morbi.

Gokhale tweeted a news clipping on December 1 regarding an alleged Right to Information request that claimed Modi’s visit to Morbi following the tragedy cost Rs 30 crore. The Press Information Bureau, however, tweeted a fact check the same day stating that the information was false.
The news clipping appeared to be from the Gujarat Samachar, a local publication. Later, the newspaper claimed it had not reported the story.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, had said on December 6 that Gokhale had not erred and that his arrest was the result of the “vindictive attitude” of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She described Gokhale as a “very bright man” and said that he is very popular on social media.
