Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has landed in controversy after her remark on Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s weight went viral. The statement, perceived as fat-shaming, sparked outrage on social media, leading to a political tussle. Following the backlash, the Congress party distanced itself from her comment, and she later deleted the post. Meanwhile, the BJP attacked the Congress leader, calling her statement disrespectful to an accomplished cricketer.
Congress Spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s Tweet on Rohit Sharma
Shama Mohamed, a Congress spokesperson, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and made a remark about Rohit Sharma’s fitness and captaincy. She tagged the Indian captain and wrote: "As a player, Rohit Sharma is overweight. He needs to lose weight and is certainly India’s most unimpressive captain."
Her comment quickly sparked outrage among fans and sports enthusiasts, who accused her of fat-shaming Rohit Sharma. Many questioned whether such below-the-belt remarks on a sports personality’s physique were necessary.
Congress Distances Itself, Urges Post Removal
As the backlash grew, the Congress party was quick to dissociate itself from Shama Mohamed’s statement. Senior party leader Pawan Khera clarified that her views did not represent the official stance of the party.
He wrote on X: "The comments made by Indian National Congress National Spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohammed on a cricket legend do not represent the official view of the party. He has been directed to delete his social media posts related to X and has also been advised to be more cautious in future. The Indian National Congress holds the contributions of sporting legends in the highest esteem and does not support any statement that undermines their legacy."
Following this, Shama Mohamed deleted the post, but the controversy did not die down.
Shama Mohamed Defends Her Statement
Despite removing the post, Shama Mohamed defended her opinion, stating that her comment was about fitness standards and not intended as body-shaming.

Addressing the criticism, she said, "It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy."
However, many users on social media did not accept her explanation and continued to criticise her for making unnecessary remarks about the Indian captain’s physique.
BJP Hits Back, Calls Out Congress Over the Remark
The BJP quickly reacted to the controversy, using it as an opportunity to target the Congress party. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised Shama Mohamed’s remark and questioned her authority to comment on Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
He wrote on X, "Those who have lost 90 elections under captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive! I guess 6 ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses is impressive but winning T20 World Cup isn’t! Rohit has a brilliant track record as captain by the way!"
