In a firm bid to address the drug menace, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has authorized the Punjab Police to spearhead one of the most extensive and intense anti-narcotics exercises ever witnessed in the state. Through a mixed approach of rapid response, social collaboration, and tactical planning, Punjab is gradually heading to a future where the state is no longer in the clutches of drugs.

The Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab provided a significant update through a social media post on June 12, 2025, to confirm that 24 kg of heroin had been seized and that important people were arrested who were linked to a bigger interstate smuggling gang.

Smarter Policing, Stronger Enforcement

This crackdown is not only concerned with high-profile arrests but also with destroying the drug ecosystems at all levels. In the leadership of CM Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab Police is also adopting contemporary policing practices in its day-to-day work. Law enforcement has become faster, more informed, and more efficient with the use of tools such as surveillance drones, drug recognition kits, crime-mapping software, and better integration with national agencies.

It is a technology-based scheme that allows police units to work based on real-time information, survey danger zones, and convict smugglers more effectively. These are some of the innovations that are assisting in transforming intelligence into positive action that is having a far more significant effect on each operation.

People-First Policing: Awareness and Rehabilitation

Although law enforcement is too strict, the direction of Bhagwant Mann is also human-orientated to the core. His government will ensure addicts are reformed and reunited with society, but the people taking advantage of their weakness are punished.

Punjab Police is also increasing its outreach to the community, especially in rural and border areas, by conducting awareness programmes, visiting schools and collaborating with NGOs. Such initiatives build trust and confidence in the community and encourage people to work closely with the police, helping the police to act on local intelligence.

This mix of tech-savvy, tough policing and media outreach is transforming the Punjab Police into a model, modern and citizen-friendly force — one that defines success not just through the number of arrests it makes but also through the number of lives it helps save.
