Congress’ new outreach campaign in Bihar took an unexpected turn on social media. The party decided to distribute sanitary pads with Rahul Gandhi’s photo on the packaging, ahead of the Bihar assembly elections. What was meant to spread menstrual health awareness ended up sparking a flood of memes online.
Launched under the Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, the campaign promises ₹2,500 monthly financial aid for women from underprivileged families. Bihar Congress President Rajesh Kumar called it a step to empower women. But the image of Rahul Gandhi on pink sanitary pad boxes quickly became the centre of online jokes.
The BJP wasted no time in slamming the campaign. Leaders from the ruling party called the initiative “anti-women.” A BJP spokesperson criticised the Congress and said, “Women of Bihar will teach Congress and RJD a lesson.”
But Congress hit back hard. All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba defended the move. She said, “The BJP has always been anti-women. The work that the BJP-led NDA government should have done has been done by the Mahila Congress…”

The internet had a field day the moment pictures of the sanitary pads hit social media. Memes and jokes rolled in fast.
One user wrote, “Rahul Gandhi’s picture on Sanitary Pads being distributed in Bihar. One Gandhi is the father of the nation, the other is the protector of menstruation.”

Another pointed out the irony: “The party that mocked PM's photo on the vaccine certificate now have no problem in printing Rahul Gandhi's photo on sanitary pads.”

Some images even showed Rahul’s face printed on the pads themselves, though it’s unclear if that was part of the plan. Either way, the campaign became meme material overnight.
The Bihar assembly polls are expected later this year, and the campaign war is only heating up. While Congress is trying to focus on women voters and social issues, the NDA is attacking their methods.
Adding to the drama, Bihar Congress President Rajesh Kumar accused the Election Commission of being biased. He said, “The way the Election Commission is functioning in Bihar is against democracy, and the Congress will not tolerate it under any circumstances,” he said.
He also raised alarm over errors in the voter list, claiming, “Names of crores of voters could be removed from the rolls.” The Congress plans to meet Bihar’s Chief Electoral Officer to discuss the issue.
