In a new initiative for youth employment and veterans' welfare, the UP government has announced a horizontal reservation of 20% for ex-Agniveers in the UP police force. The cabinet met under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, where the decision was made to implement this reservation for the thousands of Agniveers that have just completed a four-year period of service under the central government Agnipath scheme.

Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna stated that the reservation is for direct recruitment for a number of positions including Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC), Mounted Police, and Fire Services. “This is a big decision in itself. Also, there is a provision for three years' relaxation in age for ex-Agniveers. “ Khanna said.

The reservation will be for the across-the-board General, SC, ST and OBC categories. The first recruitment not expected until 2026, gives enough time for ex-Agviveers to have sourced employment post INITIAL retirement after four years of active duty.

The Agnipath scheme came into effect in 2022, allowing eligible youth (17.5 to 21.5 years) to serve in the armed forces for a four-year period. While this UP News profile, provides an assured opportunity and career for these young men or women after their hands-on commitment to service.

More states like Haryana and Odisha have also announced similar reservation initiatives for ex-Agniveers, showing a trend for these young veterans to have national support.

In this proactive approach, Yogi Adityanath has set an example of the very first post-service rehabilitation effort and proven the cabinet commitment to youth or vet welfare.
