Sonia Gandhi Has Asked Cong Chiefs for UP, Punjab, Goa To Resign: Party Leader

After the defeat of the Congress in the assembly elections of five states including UP, Uttarakhand, the round of reviews is going on at the party level.

Working President Sonia Gandhi has asked the heads of all the five states of the party to resign after the poor performance. Party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala gave this information on Tuesday.

He tweeted, “Congress President Sonia Gandhi has asked the presidents of the state units of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur to resign so that the state Congress committees can be reconstituted.”

This is the first major decision after the meeting held the day before. Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu is also among the removed party chiefs of five states.

In the assembly elections of Punjab, the ruling Congress has to face a crushing defeat at the hands of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In four other states, it had to face defeat at the hands of BJP. The biggest setback for the party was in the politically important state, UP, where the party could get only two seats.

Not only this, the vote percentage of the party in this state also came down to 2.5 percent. In the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held last Sunday, Congress leaders had expressed confidence in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and asked her to continue in office till the organizational elections are over and take necessary steps to strengthen the party.
