Third wave of COVID-19 to hit India in August: Reports

According to a study, the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to hit India in August and peak in October, with the country reporting less than 1,00,000 infections daily in the best-case scenario and about 1,50,000 in the worst-case scenario.

The spike in coronavirus cases, according to a research team led by professors Mathukumalli Vidyasagar and Manindra Agrawal of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad and Kanpur, respectively, will propel the third wave.

States with high caseload, such as Kerala and Maharashtra, could “skew the picture”, Vidyasagar told Bloomberg in an email.

The third wave of COVID-19 is unlikely to be as brutal as the second wave when India reported 400,000-plus daily cases and came down after that. The prediction by the researchers, who accurately forecast the lessening of the surge in Covid-19 cases earlier this year, is based on a mathematical model.

In May, Vidyasagar, a professor at IIT Hyderabad said India’s coronavirus outbreak could peak in the coming days based on the mathematical model. “Our predictions are that the peak will come within a few days. As per current projections, we should hit 20,000 cases per day by the end of June. We will revise this as needed,” Vidyasagar told Bloomberg by email.

Meanwhile, India recorded 40,134 new cases, 36,946 discharges & 422 deaths in last 24 hours as per Union Health Ministry data. The total number of deaths recorded is 4,24,773.

India has so far administered 470.3 million vaccine doses, but only 7.6% of the population is fully vaccinated, according to Bloomberg’s vaccine tracker. The relatively slow uptake has added to concerns that the country may not be fully geared for the next wave.
