Bengal recruitment scam: TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee appears before CBI for questioning, to move SC against Calcutta HC

Abhishek Banerjee: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in the Kuntal Ghosh letter case. CBI had summoned Abhishek to appear before it on Saturday in the multi-crore recruitment scam in the state.

Abhishek, who is a TMC MP from Diamond Harbour, South 24 Parganas, had flagged that he was served a notice on May 19 and that he was provided with “less than a day’s time” to comply with the CBI notice.

To move Supreme Court

The TMC MP in the meanwhile, has decided to move the Supreme Court against the order of the Calcutta High Court allowing the Enforcement Directorate and CBI to question him in the Kuntal Ghosh letter case.

On Thursday, the Calcutta High Court dismissed Abhishek’s plea and allowed the CBI to question him and Kuntal Ghosh in the alleged teachers’ recruitment scam in Bengal. The court said that the ED and the CBI could question both Abhishek Banerjee and Kuntal Ghosh.

Previously, Abhishek Banerjee dared the CBI to arrest him if they had any proof of corruption or misconduct against him. He also said that he would hang himself if found guilty.

Banerjee was campaigning for the TMC’s Naba Jowar Yatra mass outreach programme in Bankura on Friday. But he decided to return to Kolkata to appear before CBI.

Teachers’ recruitment scam

A CBI probe was launched in the case following an order by the Calcutta High Court bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay. The appointment of 269 primary school teachers in Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools has been termed illegal. The petitioners alleged that these candidates did not qualify the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET).

Notably, Abhishek’s name had cropped up in a complaint filed by Kuntal Ghosh, who is an accused in the scam. Ghosh alleged that he was being pressured by central investigating agencies to name Abhishek Banerjee in the case.

Meanwhile, ED conducted raids on Sujay Krishna Bhadra’s two properties on Saturday morning in connection with the Bengal recruitment scam.
