Nitin Gadkari intends to reduce road accident deaths by 50% by 2023

During the CII National Conclave on Road Safety on Tuesday, Gadkari emphasised the pressing need for enhanced road safety measures and urged the industry to devise strategies to improve road safety. These strategies should include behavioural change campaigns and the creation of a pool of technical experts and trained drivers.

The four essential “E’s” of road safety, according to Gadkari, are engineering, education, enforcement, and emergency medical services. Drawing attention to the terrible state of DPRs in the nation, he blamed engineers in large part for the surge in traffic accidents because of their poor planning and design.

By 2030, the government wants to cut the number of accidents by 50%, he said, with road safety being its top priority.

What do the statistics say?

The ministry’s 2022 report states that there were 460,000 traffic accidents, 168,000 fatalities, and 400,000 serious injuries in India in 2022. 19 people die from these accidents every hour, which happen at a rate of 53 per hour and cause 3.18% of GDP in economic losses. Though national and state highways make up only 5.5% of India’s road network, they account for 36% of road accident deaths, the minister pointed out that 16% of victims of traffic accidents are young individuals between the ages of 18 and 35.
