According to a research conducted by a professor at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, women in the working age group of 15 to 60 years spend 7.2 hours on unpaid domestic work as compared to 2.8 hours spent by men. Not only this, research based on Time Use Survey states that wage-earning women spend twice as much time on household chores as compared to wage-earning men to meet basic needs such as cleaning, preparing food and caring for the house.
Women spend 7.2 hrs on unpaid domestic work compared to 2.8 hrs spent by men
Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad professor Namrata Chindarkar told news agency PTI that through ‘Time Use Data: A Tool for Gender Policy Analysis’ it was possible to find out for the first time how much time women in India spend on domestic work. On an average, Indian women spend 7.2 hours of their daily time outdoors. While men spend 2.8 hours for such work, IIMA professor Namrata Chindarkar told PTI.
Professor Chindarkar said that this research is very useful as a tool to investigate gender inequality. He said that studies based on the Harmonized Time Use Survey conducted in Europe show that time use data has been helpful in understanding the allocation of time between women and men in different activities. Chindarkar said these studies specifically find that, across countries, women spend more time on basic household needs such as cleaning, preparing meals and caring for them.
It collects data using a 24-hour time diary
Professor Chindarkar further said that the TUS conducted by NSSO in the year 2019 is the first national time use survey for India (with the exception of Andaman and Nicobar Islands). It collects data using a 24-hour time diary (from 4 a.m. to 4 a.m. the next day). It further reveals that even wage-earning women spend twice as much time on unpaid household work as compared to wage-earning men.
The study also found that men spend about 150 minutes more per day on their jobs than women.
Professor Chindarkar said that we find that women have 24 percent less leisure time than men. In contrast, we find that wage-earning men are 72 percent more likely to work than wage-earning women. This may be commendable. The research paper states that this could be due to differences in the nature of jobs and occupations performed by men and women.
