World AIDS Vaccine Day and why is it important

World AIDS Vaccine Day: Every year on May 18, health organizations, researchers and governments celebrate World AIDS Vaccine Day.  This day, stakeholders look back on the progress made in developing a credible AIDS vaccine. World AIDS Vaccine Day also provides an opportunity for the health sector, governments and non-profits to yet again sensitize the world about this deadly health condition. The first World AIDS vaccine day was celebrated on May 18 1998.

What is AIDS?

AIDS is an abbreviation for Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome. This syndrome isn’t a disease but a health condition where an individual’s immunity is greatly weakened due to the HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

People can get HIV in various ways like having unprotected sex, sharing needles and syringes and having multiple sexual partners. Once the HIV virus enters the human body, it can take several months and even years to start affecting the immune system. The HIV virus can also be passed from infected mothers to their unborn children. However, it should be noted that hugging, kissing and sharing food doesn’t transmit HIV.

Is AIDS dangerous?

If someone has AIDS, it means his immunity towards diseases like cancer and hepatitis goes down significantly. Even mild fever and cough are difficult to treat in this condition. Furthermore, these illnesses can cause other complications ultimately leading to death.

Thanks to anti-retroviral drugs, HIV-infected persons are now able to live longer and lead better lives. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 650,000 people died of HIV-related complications in 2021. This number is roughly 27% of the 2.4 million HIV deaths in 1999 (UNAIDS), so the AIDS epidemic is seemingly receding.
