DU’s economics faculty against bid to drop three elective papers

The economics faculty at DU (University of Delhi) has voiced its strong opposition to the proposal of dropping three elective papers. The faculty members argue that eliminating these elective courses would be detrimental to the holistic learning experience and academic freedom of students.

Elective papers play a crucial role in allowing students to explore specialized areas of interest within the field of economics. By removing these papers, the university would limit the diversity of knowledge and perspectives that students can acquire. The faculty believes that such a move would hinder students’ ability to develop a well-rounded understanding of the subject and adapt to the dynamic demands of the global economy.

Moreover, the faculty emphasizes that elective courses contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the department, fostering a culture of critical thinking and academic excellence. By denying students the opportunity to choose from a range of electives, the university risks stifling intellectual curiosity and limiting students’ potential for interdisciplinary engagement.

A letter by faculty members to the V-C Thursday stated: “You may recall that during the last AC meeting, a query had been raised concerning syllabi of certain papers of the Economics department. You had set up a committee to examine (it). The recording of the same in the agenda for the EC meeting states that the committee would ‘revisit the syllabi… to avoid overlapping, similarity and to include economics of developed countries’.”

In light of these concerns, the economics faculty strongly urges the university administration to reconsider the proposal and instead seek ways to enhance the elective offerings, ensuring a comprehensive and enriching educational experience for students.
