Asia’s university race got tougher this year, and India felt it. IIT Delhi, the country’s best performer in the QS Asia University Rankings 2027, fell seven places to 66th, even as India’s total ranked institutions climbed to 325.

IIT Delhi Slips, But Still Leads India
IIT Delhi remains the country’s top-ranked university in the regional list. IISc Bengaluru follows at 79th, IIT Bombay at 83rd and IIT Madras at 85th. IIT Kharagpur is 90th, and IIT Kanpur 97th, so six Indian institutions make the top 100.
HKU Stays On Top, Tsinghua Rises
The University of Hong Kong keeps first place ahead of Peking University, while Tsinghua University rises to third. China leads in top-20 representation and new entrants, helped by research strength and reputation.
India’s Representation Grows
India has 325 ranked universities, including 34 new entrants. That makes it Asia’s second most represented higher education system, behind only Mainland China. QS says India leads the region in research output and doctoral-qualified staff.
Strong On Employer Reputation
IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi rank seventh and tenth in Asia for employer reputation, a sign that graduates are still valued by recruiters despite the overall slide.
What The Rankings Mean For Students
Regional rankings weigh academic and employer reputation, research, faculty and international engagement. A fall in rank does not always mean poorer quality, because the number of ranked institutions and the competition both keep growing. QS Senior VP Ben Sowter said this year’s rankings are “more competitive than ever.” Students and parents should read the indicator scores alongside the overall rank.
