University Grants Commission: The University Grants Commission (UGC) reported on Wednesday that 20 universities throughout India have been labelled as "fake." Students cannot receive any degrees from these institutions. Delhi is home to the most of these universities, eight in total. The UGC's action aims to safeguard students from falling for the scam of receiving their education from dubious and unaccredited institutions. Before enrolling, it is crucial for both students and their parents to confirm the university' accreditation status.
UGC's Warning Against Unaccredited Universities
"It has come to the notice of the UGC that a number of institutions are offering degrees in contrary to the provisions of the UGC Act. Degrees awarded by such universities shall neither be recognised nor valid for higher education or employment purpose. These universities are not empowered to confer any degree," a statement by UGC secretary Manish Joshi read.

UGC's Ongoing Battle Against 'Fake' Universities
The UGC published a list of 21 universities last year that it deemed to be "fake." This year, a few of the universities have also managed to land a spot on the list. The UGC states that universities can only award degrees if they were founded in accordance with a Central, State/Provincial Act, or if they were recognised as deemed-to-be universities. Institutions specifically granted authority by a law of parliament also have the right to award degrees to students. This guarantees that schools that provide degrees have the backing and permission required by law to uphold academic standards and provide valid credentials to their pupils.
