West Bengal: Dharmendra Pradhan writes to Bengal CM on teacher’s recruitment scam

West Bengal: On Tuesday, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan wrote to the chief minister of West Bengal Mamta Banerjee, expressing concern over the irregularities in teachers’ recruitment and asked her to take corrective measures.

The letter came amid an ongoing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate into a multi-crore school job scam in which it recently arrested Ex- TMC minister Partha Chatterjee on July 23, 2022.

“A large number of representations received from various teachers and teacher organisations from West Bengal regarding irregularities in the teacher recruitment in West Bengal is a matter of grave concern,” the letter read.

“The irregularities found in the teacher recruitment scam of West Bengal will certainly hamper the quality of education and demotivate the future generation,” Pradhan said, adding “I sincerely urge you to take necessary corrective measures to restore the confidence of the people.”

After the Calcutta High court ordered CBI to investigate the case after the matter erupted in irregularities in the recruitment of Group C and D staff as well as the teachers in government and -sponsored and aided schools. The probing agency has claimed that it has recovered gold and cash of around Rs 500 crore from Arpita Mukherjee, Partha Chatterjee’s aide.

Pradhan quoted some examples of irregularities in the appointment of teachers through the State level Selection Test (SLST) “I would like to bring your attention to certain instances. The process for the appointment of teachers through the State Level Selection Test (SLST) has been started in 2014. However, actual recruitment could take place only two years later in 2016,” the letter mentioned.

“Further, the recruitment process was compromised and several petitions against this process were filed. Another related case is the recruitment process of Group C and D staff in government-run or aided schools as notified by the state government in 2016 to the School Service Commission (SSC), is also a matter of grave concern,” it added.

However, the union education minister assured Mamta Banerjee of the continuous support from the central government.
