Aamir Khan’s comeback film Sitaare Zameen Par is facing a last-minute hurdle before its scheduled release on June 20, 2025. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has reportedly asked for two cuts, but Aamir isn’t willing to make them.
Without the censor certificate, the film cannot move forward with advance bookings or release. Aamir is now set to meet the CBFC’s Examining Committee on June 16 to try and resolve the issue. Until then, the release remains uncertain.
Aamir Khan Refuses To Cut Scenes From Sitaare Zameen Par
The CBFC has not shared what parts it wants removed. However, a source told Bollywood Hungama that Aamir and director RS Prasanna stand by the content. “He and director R.S. Prasanna have made the film with a lot of thought. Certain scenes and dialogues, when seen in context, seem completely appropriate.”
The film marks Aamir’s return to theatres after Laal Singh Chaddha. In the film, he plays a strict but inspiring coach who trains 10 specially-abled children to form a football team. It has already received a 12A certificate in the UK, meaning it’s suitable for audiences over 12, or younger if accompanied by an adult.
But in India, the release is stuck until the CBFC gives clearance. No theatre can sell tickets or screen the film without a certificate.
Demand Forces A Wider Release Plan
Initially, Aamir’s team planned a modest release across 1,000 to 1,500 screens. The idea was to monitor early audience reactions before expanding. But that strategy has now changed.
As per a Pinkvilla report, a strong demand from single-screen theatres and small multiplex chains pushed the team to go big. The film is now expected to open in around 3,000 screens across India—if it gets certified in time.
Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par is the official Hindi remake of the Spanish film Champions. Alongside Aamir and Genelia Deshmukh, the cast features several newcomers like Aroush Datta, Vedant Sharma, and Simran Mangeshkar, all making their Bollywood debut.
The ball is now in the CBFC’s court. If Aamir Khan can convince them on June 16, the film may still release as planned. If not, fans might have to wait longer for his big-screen return.
