Alia Bhatt surprised fans at the Cannes Film Festival after revealing that her glowing skin secret has nothing to do with expensive serums or luxury skincare treatments. Instead, the actress shared that a simple homemade Indian snack made with ghee and jaggery plays a major role in her beauty routine.
During an interview with Marie Claire France on the French Riviera, Alia opened up about her “inside-out” skincare philosophy. The actress explained that she focuses more on nutrition and gut health rather than complicated beauty products.
Alia Bhatt Reveals Her Viral ‘Skin Snack’
Talking about her skincare routine, Alia shared that she regularly eats a homemade snack prepared using ghee, jaggery (gur), crushed peanuts and coconut.
She said, “There’s this snack that I have, it’s basically ghee with a little bit of jaggery (gur), some crushed peanuts and a little bit of coconut. It’s a skin snack. I have it so that my skin looks great and genuinely, it works. It really works.”
The actress explained that she believes healthy skin starts from within. Instead of focusing only on external skincare, she prioritises balanced eating habits and gut-friendly nutrition for long-term skin health.
Alia also revealed that cooking with ghee is common in her household and forms an important part of her daily diet.
Why Alia Bhatt Believes In ‘Inside-Out’ Beauty
According to Alia Bhatt, skincare is not only about preventing sudden breakouts or achieving a temporary glow. The actress said she focuses more on long-term skin health through proper nutrition.
Her snack includes ingredients known for their nutritional benefits:
Ghee contains vitamins A, D, E, and K
Peanuts provide healthy fats and proteins
Jaggery contains iron and antioxidants
Coconut adds fibre and skin-supporting nutrients
The actress believes this combination helps maintain healthy and glowing skin naturally.
Dermatologist Explains Whether The Trend Really Works
Celebrity wellness trends often spark debate online, but dermatologist Dr Radhika Raheja from Asian Hospital says there is growing scientific evidence connecting gut health and skin quality.
As quoted by The Indian Express, Dr Raheja said, “The evidence that connects gut health, healthy fats, and quality of skin is growing rapidly. Ghee is considered a rich source of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, E, and K, which are essential for supporting skin repair and maintaining the skin barrier.”
The doctor further explained that peanuts contribute antioxidants and healthy fats, while jaggery provides trace minerals. However, she also advised consuming jaggery in moderation.
Dr Raheja added, “When the gut is healthy, it can help reduce inflammation in the body, which in turn may reflect as clearer and healthier-looking skin. However, there is no single food that will magically give you great skin. Healthy skin comes from balanced nutrition and overall gut health.”
Why Gut Health Matters For Skin
Dr Raheja also highlighted the growing importance of the gut-skin connection in dermatology research. According to her, poor digestive health can trigger inflammation that may worsen acne, eczema and skin sensitivity.
She explained, “The saying ‘beautiful skin starts in the gut’ has more truth to it than many people realise.”
The dermatologist suggested including gut-friendly foods like curd, fibre-rich meals, fermented foods, and balanced diets for healthier skin. At the same time, she clarified that skincare depends on multiple factors beyond food alone.
Dr Raheja said, “Good sleep, stress management, hydration, hormones, sun exposure and genetics are equally important. Diet is only one piece of the puzzle.”
