Another Loss For Indian Cinema On The International Circuit; Laapataa Ladies Bows Out of Oscar 2025

Out of the many films released in 2024, Laapataa Ladies was selected as the one to represent Indian cinema on the international stage in Oscars 2025. However, in the recently released shortlist of the International Feature Film category, Lapataa Ladies was not among the films that made it to the next round.

Laapataa Ladies Is Out Of Oscars 2025 International Feature Film Category

Out of the many submissions from countries around the world, the Oscars panel shortlisted 15 films who will proceed to the next round and compete for the final five list. In the 15 films were, I'm Still Here from Brazil, Universal Language from Canada, Waves from Czech Republic among many others. However, the Kiran Rao directed film Laapataa Ladies was not among them.

X Users React To Laapataa Ladies Not Making The Shortlist

After the release of the shortlist, X users let their feelings known on Laaptaa Ladies not making it to the shortlist. One user wrote, “So, the @TheAcademy  Oscars shortlist is out. #LaapataaLadies is a very well made, entertaining movie (I enjoyed it), but was absolutely the wrong choice to represent India for the best #InternationalFeatureFilm category. As expected, it lost.”

Another user expressed his disappointment on the topic by saying, “Unfortunately, the list didn't include the 'Laapataa Ladies', leaving the Indian audience disappointed.”

More reactions are coming as echoing the similar sentiments, with people expressing their disappointment in Laaptaa Ladies not making it to the next round of International Feature Film Category. It will be interesting to see if this loss affects India’s selection process for the Oscars.
