The death of Asha Bhosle has not only left India mourning but has also sparked an unexpected controversy across the border. In Pakistan, a tribute aired by Geo News has come under scrutiny, leading to legal action and a wider debate on whether art should be restricted by borders.
The legendary singer passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai, marking the end of a historic musical journey. While tributes poured in globally, one such homage has now triggered a serious response from authorities in Pakistan.
Asha Bhosle Death Row: Pakistan Acts Against Geo News
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a show-cause notice to Geo News. The authority claims the channel violated a Supreme Court order by airing Indian content while paying tribute to Asha Bhosle.
Geo News’ managing director Azhar Abbas addressed the issue on X. He defended the editorial decision, saying it is common practice to revisit an artist’s work after their passing. He also suggested that the channel could have aired even more of her “timeless and memorable songs.”
Abbas strongly criticised the restriction, stating, “Yet, PEMRA has chosen to restrict this. Art, like knowledge, is a shared heritage of humanity, and it should not be confined by borders.”
Abbas further highlighted Asha Bhosle’s connection with Pakistan’s music legends. He said she admired Noor Jahan and collaborated with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, showing how art has always crossed boundaries.
‘Art Has No Borders’ Debate Gains Momentum
The controversy has now turned into a wider debate online. Abbas emphasised that “art and artistes should not become casualties” during times of conflict. He added, “Intellectuals, musicians and creators are often the very voices that stand against hatred and division, and the ones who bring people closer together.”
However, PEMRA maintained that the channel’s action was a “wilful defiance [of] the judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of Pakistan… wherein airing of Indian content was prohibited.”
The background to this issue goes back to 2018, when Pakistan’s Supreme Court reinstated a ban on Indian films and TV content. Earlier restrictions were briefly lifted before being reimposed.
What’s Next For Geo News After Controversial Tribute To Asha Bhosle
As per reports, PEMRA has summoned Geo News CEO Mir Ibrahim Rehman and asked the channel to respond within 14 days. The authority is seeking an explanation on why legal action should not be taken.
The situation has divided opinion online. Some users supported the crackdown, while others criticised it. One user wrote, “Since India blacklisted our media and stars, Geo’s obsession is baffling.”
On the other hand, many defended the tribute. One comment read, “Art and culture have always crossed borders when politics couldn’t. Legendary artistes like Asha Bhosle belong to the entire subcontinent.”
Asha Bhosle was one of India’s most celebrated playback singers, with over 12,000 songs to her name. Her contribution to music earned her a Guinness World Record and a place in history.
