Amitabh Bachchan: As the Bollywood giant Amitabh Bachchan is turning 82 today, fans are sending him all the love and wishes on his birthday. As popular as Amitabh Bachchan is, his personal to professional life everything has been in the public eye. There are numerous things people know about Big B and recall them occasionally. One such thing is his wedding to popular veteran actress Jaya Bachchan. Today, we will go back to 1973 when the power couple of B-town got married and how Amitabh invited Jaya's parents to Bombay.
Amitabh Bachchan Called His Father-in-Law and Said THIS
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan got married on 3rd June 1973. The actor was courting his lady for a very long time and has met Jaya's father quite a few times. Jaya Bachchan's father Taroon Coomar Bhaduri was a very famous journalist. Once he wrote an article for Illustrated Weekly of India in 1989 and expressed a lot of things. In his article, Taroon mentioned the way, on one fine day Amitabh Bachchan called him and asked him to come bombay. Due to the forgetful nature of Mr Bhaduri, he asked why. To which the superstar replied 'Ma knows. She'll tell you.' He was inviting Taroon Bhaduri to Jaya and his wedding.
Jaya's father wrote in the article, "I still remember the date—May 25, 1973—when I got a surprise trunk-call at Bhopal. The caller said, “Baba, I am Amit. Can you and Ma come to Bombay tomorrow?” “What for?” I said. “Ma knows, she’ll tell you.” My wife told me: “Damn it, you are getting old. They are getting married.” And presto, we were in Bombay the next day to make arrangements for a ‘secret marriage’ on June 3, 1973. There is no point now in going into the details of how the whole affair was kept secret and the marriage arranged in the flat of friends of our family, the Pandits, at Malabar Hill. But there is something more to it."
Apart from asking Jaya Bachchan's father to come to Bombay, Amitabh Also followed the Bengali traditions to marry the actress.
When Bengali Priest Protested Against Amitabh for the Wedding
Amitabh Bachchan's father-in-law also revealed in his article that the Bengali priest protested against Amitabh Bachchan for not being Bengali and Brahmin. He wrote, "I am an atheist, but my wife is not. She insisted that it should be a proper Bengali marriage. A Bengali marriage is usually a long-drawn-out but highly interesting affair. The Bengali priest (who was located with great difficulty) at first protested against having to preside over a marriage between a Bengali brahmin (Jaya) and a non-Bengali non-brahmin (Amit). After a lot of hassles, this was sorted out."
He also said that Amitabh Bachchan went through all the rituals without questioning them even once. Bhaduri added, "Amit went through all the rituals, offending no one, and the ceremony went on until early the next morning. He did with sincerity all he was told to do." This shows that Amitabh Bachchan has always been kind, respectful and generous. There is nothing pretentious about his personality.
As Amitabh Bachchan is still working hard to entertain his fans and lovers, he should keep the good work going.
