Cirkus Movie Review : A comedy of errors or theatre of absurd?

Cirkus Movie Review: It’s the story of two sets of identical twins separated at birth and how they end up in the same town at the same time, years later. Total confusion and misunderstanding ensues and throws their lives into a tizzy. This Rohit Shetty film is supposed to be a comedy of errors but is anything but that!

ICYMI: After London Film Festival, Anurag Kashyap’s directorial ‘Dobaaraa’ to be screened at Fantasia Film Festival

Drama looks unreal

‘Cirkus’ is based in the late 60s or early 70s era of picturesque green hills of Ooty. In a desperate attempt to pay tribute to the cinema of that era, the director has made the set look unreal. Classic Bollywood numbers popping up at regular intervals in the background makes the film irritating. Actors costumes are loud as is their acting in an all-out slapstick comedy.

Though Shetty has tried hard, you will find it hard to laugh even if you try. The plot involves caricatures. As a result, good actors are wasted and they end up delivering unfunny dialogues. There are situations that go nowhere. The screenplay is stale, lacks comedy and punchlines is repetitive.

Ranveer lacks conviction

Ranveer Singh tries his best in double role but both characters lack conviction. Deepika Padukone’s cameo in the song ‘Current Laga Re’ is the only respite. Varun Sharma’s comic timing has gone horribly wrong. The responsibility to make you laugh is solely on Johny Lever (as Polson bhai) and you feel bad for him. The ace comedian has managed to create more rib-tickling moments in his few minutes of screentime than the entire cast put together.

Pooja Hegde looks resplendent in her sombre role of Roy’s wife Mala. Jacqueline Fernandez steps in to add the glam quotient as Roy’s girlfriend and does just that. Sanjay Mishra alone can’t save the film.

‘Cirkus’ has got a battery of characters whose sole purpose is to make the viewer laugh. But that one key element is missing from the film. Till now Rohit Shetty had managed to walk the tightrope of slapstick comedy and drama. But in Cirkus he trips and fallen flat on his face.
