A rough cut of Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana Part 1 was recently shown to a small, selected audience in Los Angeles. This private screening happened months ahead of its planned Diwali release, giving viewers an early glimpse of the epic.
The test screening took place at the Cinemark Playa Vista theatre. People aged between 18 and 60 were present, offering a wide mix of opinions.

As per a report by The Week, the initial response was highly positive. Many praised the film’s scale, strong visuals, and engaging storytelling.
It is important to note that this was not the final version. The makers showcased only a first cut to understand audience reactions. Based on the feedback, the film is expected to go through further changes and refinements.
Although the filmmakers have not officially shared details, early feedback suggests the screening went well. Viewers were especially impressed by the visual effects and the overall cinematic experience.
Producer Namit Malhotra, who is backing the ambitious project, earlier spoke about the challenges of making a film of this scale. On Komal Nahta’s Game Changers podcast, he opened up about the journey behind Ramayana.

He said, “The shooting for Part 1 is almost over now. When I started planning the film, we had a huge vision. Everyone, including the actors, asked me if I have enough funds to pull it off. I’ve finished the first film and have not borrowed a single rupee.”
He further added, “I don’t know where the money is coming from. When people ask me how I pulled it off, even I don’t know. This is something else. It’s just happening on its own. This is not just a project or a business proposition.”
Talking about the budget, Malhotra explained, “People ask me what my final budget is going to be. I don’t know. I don’t check that every day. I just see if we’re making the right product. There should be no compromise anywhere.”

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana features an impressive ensemble cast. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Ram, while Sai Pallavi essays the role of Goddess Sita. Yash will be seen as Ravan. The cast also includes Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Ravi Dubey as Laxman.
Reports suggest Ranbir Kapoor made major lifestyle changes for the role. He followed a sattvic diet and gave up smoking and alcohol to reflect the character’s spiritual discipline.
On the technical front, the film boasts Oscar-winning VFX by DNEG. There is also buzz that Kapoor may be seen in a double role as Ram and Parashuram. Additionally, rumours suggest Amitabh Bachchan could lend his voice to the character of Jatayu.
Ramayana is planned as a two-part saga. The first part is set for a grand Diwali release later this year, while the second part is expected next year. A special character launch event is also likely to take place in Mumbai around Ram Navami.
