From IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack to Mulk, Anubhav Sinha’s Top 5 Most Controversial Films

Anubhav Sinha: Indian film director, producer and screenwriter Anubhav Sinha is making headlines these days with his latest Netflix release. Vijay Verma, Naseeruddin Shah and Dia Mirza starrer IC 814: The Kandahar Hijak is in the news for its controversial setting. The show is based on the book ‘Flight into Fear: The Captain’s Story’ by Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhary. It was released on Netflix on 29th August 2024 and began creating a stir recently. The web show is causing controversy because of the alleged changes in the real names of the 5-piece terrorist group. In this series, the terrorists were given code names ‘Chief’, ‘Doctor’, ‘Burger’, ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’. These code names include two Hindu names which is causing an uproar in the community. People are claiming that the director is trying to hide the fact that the five terrorists were Muslims.

Apart from the ongoing controversy, Anubhav Sinha has always created something that eventually became a part of the news. Here are four more films of the IC 814 director that had been a part of the controversy.

Anubhav Sinha film Mulk (2018)

In 2018, Anubhav Sinha came up with a film called ‘Mulk’ starring Taapsee Pannu and Rishi Kapoor. This film was majorly shot in Lucknow and Varanasi and showcased the story of a Muslim family. The family goes through all the majors to regain its lost honour after a member of the family was alleged to be a terrorist. This film caused a major ruckus back then. On one hand, it was highly appreciated by the Indian audience and countries like UAE but it allegedly got banned in Pakistan.

Thappad (2020)

Anubhav Sinha once again worked with Taapsee Pannu and created a cinematic masterpiece ‘Thappad’. This film addressed the issue of every household and its women. The film’s main motive was to talk about the intentional and unrecognisable misogyny that happens in every family. Thappad also showcases society’s mentality and how the husband’s misbehave is normalized. The classic film was appreciated a lot however, it was also in the news for altering the culture. Rajasthan Police used the poster of the film to encourage women to report the domestic violence they face.

Anek (2022)

Anubhav Sinha directorial Anek was an action-thriller released in 2022. Anubhav joined hands with Ayushmann Khurrana and addressed the issues of North-East and the Separatist movement. The film overall had an amazing reception by the audience but some critics didn’t like the screenplay and direction of the film. They said the film was dense.

Afwaah (2023)

Anubhav Sinha Afwaah was released in 2023. The flick showcased politics and its leaders who divide the communities by setting propaganda. The film features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bhumi Pednekar as leads and it addressed the issues of discrimination. It was released alongside Kerala stories and tried to make individuals aware and think before they decide. The major story of the film revolved around Love Jihad and Communal Violence which created the major stir.
