Gangubai Kathiawadi Controversy: SC Suggests Name Change

The Supreme Court has suggested that Sanjay Leela Bhansali change the name of his new movie Gangubai Kathiawadi, releasing this Friday. The court has made the suggestion in light of the several cases pending before courts seeking to halt its release.

The lawyer for Bhansali Productions, Siddhartha Dave, informed the top court today that he will seek instructions from his client about the suggestion. The Supreme Court will continue hearing the matter tomorrow.

Recently, Congress MLA Amin Patel filed a petition in Bombay High Court to change the name of the film, alleging it misrepresents Kamathipura as a red-light area while showing the Kathiawadi community in poor light.

Meanwhile, Speaking with news agency ANI, Alia said, “Neither any controversy nor any comment bothers me. I don’t think anything bothers me beyond a point. Of course, I feel like there’s a certain novelty that just a part of a film holds…whether the film is a good film or a bad film ..that doesn’t matter. The audience makes the final decision after watching the film… Anything that happens before or after can’t really change the fate.”

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, ‘Gangubai Kathiwadi’ is the story of a woman who is sold to a suitor and forced into prostitution. She later emerges as a prominent and celebrated figure as she fights for the rights of the women in this business.
