Emraan Hashmi is ready to take on a serious and emotional role in his new film Haq. The courtroom drama stars him with Yami Gautam and is inspired by the historic Shah Bano case. The film focuses on women’s dignity, rights and the long battle for equality. These themes still matter today, and the story aims to spark honest conversations.

In Haq, Emraan plays a respected lawyer. His world turns tense when his estranged wife takes him to court for maintenance. The film shows a situation many women face in real life. Emraan believes the story speaks to every society that still struggles with patriarchy and unfair gender roles.

Emraan Hashmi Says Haq Doesn’t Target Muslim Community

Speaking to ANI, the actor shared why he feels the film is important today. He said Haq is about gender bias and not about religion. He said, “It’s a story of a woman’s voice, a story of equality. It’s a story of a certain right to dignity and a story for men as well.”

Emraan also pointed out how deeply patriarchy affects women. “I think these biases that men have in a patriarchal society, that we think it’s a man’s world, and we will do whatever we can, and it costs a woman her dignity. That has been reflected in this film.”

Emraan cleared up any misunderstandings about the film’s theme. He said Haq does not target the Muslim community. Instead, the story highlights the loss women face due to gender bias. “This is a film where, when you step out of the theatre, we will find it is pro-women and we have raised the issue for their dignity, for their equality of rights,” he said. He added that the film remains neutral and does not blame anyone. “We are not judging anyone in this film or pointing fingers. We have just shown you the case in a very unbiased way. And then it is up to you as to how you step out of the theatre.”

About Shah Bano Case And Haq Movie

For context, the Shah Bano case was a turning point in the fight for Muslim women’s rights in India. In 1978, Shah Bano Begum asked the court for maintenance from her husband after many years of marriage. The history was created as Supreme Court ruled in her favour. But the verdict was reversed by the government in 1986, leading to national debate and protests.

Haq is directed by Suparn S Varma. Emraan plays Ahmed, and Yami portrays a character inspired by Shah Bano. The cast also includes Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady. The film is produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta and Harman Baweja.
