International Music Day: Musicians from India who won Grammy Awards. See List here

International Music Day is celebrated every year on 1 October. The motive behind celebrating this day is to promote music all over the world. In the last few years, International Music Day has attracted the attention of governments and people who are busy with work all the time. Music is not limited to any religion or country. Music connects people’s hearts. On this special occasion of International Music Day, we will tell you about the musicians who won Grammy award for India and made the whole country proud.

From the spectacular AR Rahman to the classical king Pandit Ravi Shankar, there is no shortage of musical legends in India. The Grammy awards are one of the most prestigious awards in the whole music industry. Only most unique and original artists are given this award. India is home for some of the great musicians and many of them taken India to world level. There are many genres of music and several traditional instruments have managed to capture the heart of the Western world. So let’s take a look at some of the great Indian musicians who won the Grammy awards.

Pandit Ravi Shankar

Pandit Ravi Shankar is one of the most famous faces in Indian classical music, not only in India but also abroad. He has won four Grammy awards including a very prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. The first award he won for his excellent performances at Monetary Film Festival in 1967. Legendary singer won the award in the category of “Best Chamber Music Performance”. In the year 1971, he conquered the hearts of the people by his album of a charity concert called “Concert of Bangladesh”, he won his second Grammy for this. He is also known as the best sitar player in the world.

AR Rahman

AR Rahman is one of the modern music creators in India and he is the living legend. He is composer of mostly Hindi and Tamil movies. He is trained in many countries of music including Western, Indian classical and Carnatic music. His songs are often a very unique creation  of different types of classical and modern genres of music. He has won many awards including Padma Bhushan. In 2006, Stanford University honored him for his contribution to music. Recently, a street in Canada named as AR Rahman Street.

His biggest achievement was winning “Best compilation soundtrack album” and “Best song written for motion picture” for the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt

VIshwa Mohan Bhatt is popular for his expertise in playing Mohan Veena, also known as slide guitar. He was awarded Grammy in 1993 for his album  “A Meeting by The River” with Ry Cooder in the category “Best World Music Album”.

Shridhar

The journey of H. Shridhar is different because he did not pursue music from the beginning, he was a mathematics student. He had keen interest in music and he started working with legendary composer as a sound engineer. Shridhar was awarded the Grammy for “Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture” along with AR Rahman for the film Slumdog Millionaire.

Zakir Hussain

Zakir Hussain is famous in the country for his perfection in playing tabla. He is skilled in genres like Hindustani classical music, jazz, fusion and other contemporary music. Zakir was also awarded by the Indian government the Padma Bhushan in 2002.

He was awarded first Grammy for “Best World Music Album” in 1992 for the album “Planet Drum”. The legendary tabla player won his second Grammy award for his music album “Global Drum” in the category of “Contemporary World Music Album”.

Vikku Vinayak

He is one of the  hidden gems of Indian Music. He had a unique talent of playing Ghatam, that is an earthen pot. Generating pleasing and lovely sound waves from an earthen pot is difficult but Vikku Vinayaka mastered himself in doing this. He is considered as the God of Ghatam.

Vikku Vinayaka won the Grammy award for his work in the “Planet Drums” in 1991. He is the first South indian to win Grammy award.
