Jubilee review: Delve deep into the age of innocence in Vikram Motwane’s series

Jubilee movie review: Vikramaditya Motwane’s Jubilee is the perfect tribute to the lost golden era of movies. The 10-episode series on Amazon Prime transports you to the age of innocence, devoid of modern time’s pressures.

Jubilee is set around the time of partition. It celebrates the love for movies. The first episode introduces us to studio owner Srikant Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee) who is looking for a new face. He finds his man in Jamshed Khan (Nandish Singh Sandhu). But then the road to success is riddled with thorns and obstacles.

Aparshakti Khurana is a revelation

Binod Das (Aparshakti Khurana), who is Srikant’s employee, has a secret desire to turn into an actor. He’s entrusted with the job of bringing Jamshed Khan to Mumbai but does just the opposite.

The women in Jubilee too stand out in their respective  roles. Sumitra Devi (Aditi Rao Hydari) is bent on having an affair with a struggling actor, while Nilofer (Wamiqa Gabbi) is a dancer but has ambitions beyond anyone’s imagination.

A master storyteller

Motwane is a master storyteller. He has given us some brilliant films like Udaan and cult classic Lootera. In Jubilee, he takes you along on a journey and you get get to know the characters.

Technically one of the best shows in recent times, it amalgamates all aspects like direction, set design and dialogues. It transports you to the era and makes you wonder if the characters are playing real life actors of that era.

Aparshakti Khurana Wamiq Gabbi have given layered performances. Especially Khurana, who we have seen mostly in comic roles, surprised with his nuanced acting. Wamiq as a seductress is passionate. Sidhant Gupta and Nandish Singh Sandhu too have equally important roles and given their best.

For Aditi Rao Hydari, playing period characters has become a practice and she has mastered the art here.

Don’t expect instant gratification from Jubilee. Enjoy it like a dish cooked on low fire and the taste is divine.

Kudos to Vikram Motwane for his brilliant direction.

Jubilee is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
