Vishnu Manchu’s Kannappa and Kajol’s Maa clashed at the box office this Friday. While Kannappa came with a Rs 200 crore budget and star power, it was Maa that pulled off a quiet but strong opening.

Despite a wide release and big names like Prabhas and Akshay Kumar in cameos, Kannappa opened below the Rs 10 crore mark. Meanwhile, Kajol’s horror drama surprised everyone with a Rs 4.5 crore opening, beating her last theatrical release by a big margin.

Kannappa Box Office Collection Day 1

According to early numbers from Sacnilk, Kannappa earned Rs 9 crore on Day 1. The Telugu version performed the best with 55.89% occupancy. Hyderabad and Bengaluru led the show, especially during the evening and night slots.

Tamil regions showed lower interest, with 16.45% occupancy overall. Chennai had the best turnout in Tamil Nadu. In Hindi-speaking areas, Delhi saw the most shows, but overall occupancy remained low at 14.56%. The Kannada version recorded 13.81%, while Malayalam lagged behind at 7.20%.

Despite high production value and big-budget visuals, the film's opening didn’t meet expectations. With mixed word-of-mouth, its weekend growth will be key. Global earnings are yet to be reported.

Maa Box Office Collection Day 1

Maa (directed by Chhorii filmmaker Vishal Furia) marked Kajol’s return to the big screen after three years. It opened at Rs 4.5 crore, easily topping the Rs 0.65 crore opening of her last film Salaam Venky. Not just this, it also surpassed Salaam Venky's lifetime earnings on Day 1 itself.

The horror film saw low turnout in morning shows (8.23%) but picked up momentum later. Night shows went up to 32.61% occupancy. Chennai (31.33%), Lucknow (28.75%), and NCR (27%) led regional response, with Mumbai close behind.

The film follows Ambika, played by Kajol, a mother who takes on supernatural forces to protect her daughter. It also stars Ronit Roy and features R Madhavan in a surprise cameo.

Kannappa had the hype but couldn’t turn it into strong numbers. Maa, on the other hand, quietly delivered a solid start and outperformed expectations.
