Ponniyin Selvan 2 day 1 collection: Director Mani Ratnam’s epic historical saga Ponniyin Selvan II released across the world today. While fans were anxiously waiting for the film, Ponniyin Selvan II day 1 collections look fairly good. It is already off to a strong start in the US.
While the first part PS I went on to gross more than Rs 500 crore worldwide, Part II is expected to also perform well at the box office.
Early reports predict good business
Early estimates reported by industry tracker Sacnilk suggest that Ponniyin Selvan II can make Rs 30 crore across India in all languages on day 1. The film targets Tamil Nadu, where the source material — Kalki Krishnamurthy’s epic novel — remains popular to this day. According to Sacnilk, the film registered over 44% occupancy in Tamil Nadu in the morning shows. By comparison, the first film made Rs 34 crore on its opening day in India, and Rs 80 crore worldwide.
While we wait for the day to end, there doesn’t seem to be too wide a gap separating the first and second films. However, reports said PS-2 sold tickets worth Rs 7.6 crore in advance, which is significantly lower than the Rs 16 crore worth of advance sales by PS I.
Highest Tamil grosser in US
On the other side, according to Lyca Productions, Ponniyin Selvan II has already grossed $500,000 in the US, and is expected to hit $1 million on its first day of release. It is the first film to gross $5.5 million in the US, the highest for any Tamil-language film.
Ponniyin Selvan II stars Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala and others. The film is being released in five languages in India — Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
