Kamal Haasan has approached the Karnataka High Court to make sure his film Thug Life releases smoothly in the state. This comes after the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) supported protests calling for a ban on the film. The protests were sparked by Kamal’s recent remark about the Kannada language. He also asked the court to provide police protection during the screenings.
The controversy began when Kamal said at the Thug Life audio launch in Chennai that “Kannada is born out of Tamil.” Many pro-Kannada groups found the statement disrespectful. They demanded an apology and warned they would block the release if he didn’t take his words back.
Kamal Haasan Refuses To Apologise
Kamal isn’t ready to apologise. Through his production house Raaj Kamal Films International, he filed a petition requesting the court to stop any interference from the state government, police, or trade bodies. He also asked for enough security to avoid trouble during the film’s release.
Despite all the pressure, Kamal is standing firm. He said, “I’ve been threatened before. If I’m wrong, I’ll apologise. If I’m not, I won’t. This is my lifestyle, please don’t tamper with it." He made it clear that he won’t say sorry unless he truly believes he’s wrong.
KFCC Under Pressure, But Can’t Ban Thug Life Legally
KFCC president NM Suresh said the Chamber cannot legally ban any film. But he added that they acted based on public sentiment. He said to News18, “It is now about insulting and hurting the sentiments of the 7 crore people of Karnataka."
Suresh explained that they gave Kamal Haasan 24 hours to apologise after public outrage grew. Since there was no apology, the pressure to stop the film increased. He added, “All he has to do is say what he said was wrong and issue a public apology. Nothing less will be accepted."
For the unversed, Thug Life is all set to hit theatres worldwide on June 5.
