Oscars 2026 Nominations List: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday announced the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards. The list delivered historic wins for Hollywood and a major disappointment for India. The biggest shock was the absence of Homebound from the final nominations in the Best International Feature Film category.
Homebound (India’s official entry for Oscars 2026) had earlier made it to the prestigious Oscars shortlist. However, when the final nominations were revealed on January 22, the Neeraj Ghaywan-directed film failed to secure a spot. The snub has left many people disheartened.
Oscars 2026 Nominations: Why Homebound Missing From The Final List Hurts India
The film had an impressive festival journey. Homebound was nominated in the Un Certain Regard category at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. It also finished as the second runner-up at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. These achievements had raised hopes that the film would finally break India’s long Oscars dry spell in the category.
At the Oscars 2026, Homebound was among the 15 films shortlisted from a total of 89 official entries submitted by countries worldwide. Making it to the shortlist is a major achievement. It marks the second-last stage in the Oscars race, where all shortlisted films are viewed and voted on by Academy members.
On the shortlist, Homebound stood alongside celebrated international titles such as Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident from France and Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice from South Korea. This showed how tough the competition was this year. In the end, the films that made the final cut were The Secret Agent, It Was Just An Accident, Sentimental Value, Sirat and The Voice Of Hind Rajab.
Oscars 2026 Nominations: Ryan Coogler’s Sinners Creates History
While India faced disappointment, Hollywood witnessed a record-breaking moment. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners dominated the nominations with a massive 16 nods. This is the highest number of nominations ever received by a single film in Oscars history. Earlier, the record was shared by James Cameron’s Titanic and Joseph L Mankiewicz’s All About Eve, with 14 nominations each.
Other films also made a strong impact. Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme earned 10 nominations, while Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another secured 12 nods. Despite strong support and expectations, Homebound remained missing from the final list.

India’s Long Oscars Struggle Continues
DON'T MISS
The nominations were announced during a live-streamed event hosted by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman. The Oscars ceremony will be held on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Comedian Conan O’Brien will return as the host.
India’s record in the Best International Feature Film category has been challenging. In the Academy Awards’ 98-year history, only four Indian films have reached the shortlist. Out of these, just three (Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988), and Lagaan (2002)) went on to receive final nominations. More recently, Chhello Show made the shortlist in 2021 but did not move ahead, similar to Homebound.
India did celebrate an Oscars win with RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” taking home Best Original Song. However, an Oscar win in a major film category still remains out of reach.
