Ranveer Singh is facing strong backlash for his comments and mimicry related to Kantara Chapter 1. A video from the IFFI 2025 closing ceremony showed him imitating Rishab Shetty’s powerful Daiva act and mistakenly calling Chavundi Daiva a “ghost”. What seemed like a light moment on stage quickly turned into a controversy, with many calling the act disrespectful.
People at the event laughed, and Rishab Shetty also smiled. But social media reacted very differently. Users pointed out that Daivas are sacred forest deities in coastal Karnataka and should never be compared to ghosts. Many viewers also said Ranveer’s exaggerated mimicry felt unnecessary, especially since Rishab had reportedly warned him earlier not to imitate him.
Ranveer Singh Issues Apology After Massive Criticism From Kantara Chapter 1 Fans
As criticism grew, Ranveer posted an apology on Instagram Stories on Tuesday morning. He wrote, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.”
The actor added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
His apology came shortly after a Hindu group submitted a police complaint, saying his comments and performance hurt religious sentiments.

How The Controversy Started
The issue started when clips from the IFFI stage began circulating online. In one video, Ranveer praised Rishab Shetty’s performance and said, “I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres, and Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost (Chamundi daiva) enters your body — that shot was amazing.”
He then recreated the moment dramatically. Although he intended to appreciate the actor, his choice of words upset many, who felt he misunderstood a sacred cultural practice.
Another clip added to the debate. It appeared to show Rishab telling Ranveer earlier not to mimic him, which made fans more frustrated. What began as friendly banter soon turned into a wider conversation about cultural respect and sensitivity.
