Actor Sanjay Dutt has revealed a surprising origin story behind his upcoming film Khalnayak Returns. The actor said the idea for the sequel was born during his time in jail, when he interacted with thousands of inmates who responded strongly to the idea of bringing back the iconic character Ballu.

The film, which revisits the 1993 cult classic Khalnayak, was officially announced on Friday. Sanjay Dutt’s production house and co-producers have secured rights from filmmaker Subhash Ghai and Mukta Arts. The teaser shows Dutt reprising his role with a rugged new look, while the project promises to blend nostalgia with a modern cinematic style.

Sanjay Dutt Reveals How Jail Conversation Sparked Sequel Idea

Sanjay Dutt shared that the idea began during his jail term linked to the 1993 Mumbai blast case. He said he tested the concept with fellow inmates before shaping the story idea.

He said, “In jail, I asked everyone around me — who would be interested in watching it. And the 4,000 inmates said they all would. I asked all of them to write one page about it (new ‘Khalnayak’ story), and it took me a while to read all 4,000 pages.”

He added that the response surprised him and gave him confidence to move ahead with the idea once he was out on parole.

Actor Shared Khalnayak Returns Concept With Subhash Ghai

Sanjay Dutt later said he shared the concept with Subhash Ghai after his release. The filmmaker reportedly supported the idea and encouraged its development into a full project.

He said, “When I came out on parole, I asked Subhash sir to go through it. After that, he said it should be made.”

The original Khalnayak, released in 1993, became a major hit and developed a strong cult following. It featured Sanjay Dutt as the anti-hero Ballu, alongside Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit. The film was known for its intense storyline, music, and memorable characters.

What Sanjay Dutt Starrer Khalnayak Returns Promises

The new film is being produced by Sanjay Dutt’s banner in collaboration with Jio Studios. Industry executive Jyoti Deshpande is also part of the creative leadership team.

Reports suggest the sequel will follow Ballu’s life after prison, exploring how he adjusts to a changed world two decades later. A teaser has already shown him as an older, hardened version of the character returning to the underworld setting.

While full details of the script remain under wraps, the makers say the film will retain the essence of the original.
