Sanjay Leela Bhansali: Director-writer-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a reluctant filmmaker. He makes films at his own pace. But everytime he does that, he dishes out a blockbuster that creates magic, music and performances to remember. Over the years, SLB has given the audience some iconic films and in the process, he has rightly become an inheritor of Indian film legacy.
Today he is matching steps with the likes of Raj Kapoor, K Asif, Mehboob Khan, V Shantaram, Guru Dutt, Kamal Amrohi.
And as Sanjay Leela Bhansali turns 60 today on February 24, here are some of his best films that changed the shape of Hindi cinema.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
1999 film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam starred Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles that turned out to become a blockbuster. Sanjay Leela Bhansali wrote, directed and produced the project. The film was considered way ahead of its time and only SLB could have pulled off a larger-than-life love story and drama simultaneously, without making it look OTT.
Devdas
SLB brought three biggest stars of Bollywood together in Devdas – Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit. An adaptation from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, SLB turned the story into a cinematic marvel. No wonder the dialogues, songs, acting and the iconic ‘Isssh’ continue to remain an all-time favourite.
Black
Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji’s Black was an experimental film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. So far he had mostly helmed love stories but then Black came out of the blue and gave everyone a pleasant surprise. The film can easily be counted as one of the best Hindi films ever made.
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela
2013 film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela starred Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh and it changed their lives forever! A fresh story, their chemistry and storyline made it one of the biggest blockbusters of 2013. To date, Ranveer and Deepika often credit SLB for changing their career paths through this film. The film was followed by Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat.
Gangubai Kathiawadi
The year 2022 turned out to be a nightmare for Bollywood. But Alia Bhatt and SLB’s Gangubai Kathiawadi gave the industry something to cheer about. The film was a huge hit and not only was Alia gave an excellent performance, the project also reached places on several international platforms.
Heeramandi
The filmmaker is making his OTT debut with Netflix project Heeramandi which stars actresses like Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal and Sanjeeda Sheikh. From the first look, the film looks regal, to say the least. While more details are awaited, we are getting impatient to know more.
